Innovation Highlights

SpreFix is a method for spray on insulation. The material is intended for sound absorption, moisture and condensation control, fire protection and also as thermal insulation.
For over ten years, SpreFix have been spraying insulation all over the world under the name of SpreFix™. SprayTec™ is the next generation of insulation material.
Two different SpreFix™ methods are available: one which is applied with glass wool and one which is applied with rock wool are available. The first method is intended for sound absorption, moisture and condensation control, and thermal lightweight insulation.

Property spectrum: State
Changing the state of a product is one of the most prominent properties in Directed Variation. It describes an evolution of products and processes starting with solid matter and then moving to liquids, gases, sprays and finally fields. Each step in this direction can deliver significant benefits.

This is a new case of manufacturing food that tells it when it's cooked. In this particular case, experts at the British Egg Information Service have developed an egg stamped with a special thermochromic logo that becomes visible when the egg is ready. All you need to decide is whether you want your eggs soft, medium or hard-boiled.
The eggs are slated to hit the supermarket shelves this fall, though likely only in Britain.

Property spectrum: Information
Systems and subsystems tend to evolve from requiring external input to becoming self-controlling through the use of feedback mechanisms. For the egg, the feedback consists of telling you if the egg is done.

Called the Deep Bleeder Acoustic Coagulation (DBAC) program, it aims to create a cuff-like device that wraps around a wounded limb. Rather than applying pressure to the wound to stem the flow of blood, the device would use focused beams of ultrasound (sound waves above the audible frequencies) to non-invasively clot vessels no matter how deep they are.
Once applied to a wounded limb, the cuff would automatically detect and then seal damaged blood vessels or arteries, by focusing beams of ultrasonic waves at the wound to clot it, in a process known as high-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU.

Property spectrum: State
Just like the spray on insulation, this example is about changed state. The insulation moved from solid to liquid (spray), and this example moved to field.

Pod-propulsion innovator ABB has proposed a system, in which a steerable Azipod unit is mounted immediately behind the standard propeller. Located on the same axis, but without any physical connection, the pod pulling propeller will contra-rotate in relation to the shaft-driven main propeller. This arrangement results in some 10 % improvement in hydrodynamic propulsion efficiency.

Property spectrum: Multiplication
This property highlights the benefits associated with increasing the number of similar elements within a system. Two eyes give a focus, two bins allow you to separate waste types. This camera provides you with both a wide-angle lens as well as a zoom lens.

This month we selected the submission of An Decrock from Picanol.
Wouldn't it be great if someone could invent a simple, fun way to teach our children to wash their hands? The wait is over with SquidSoap.
SquidSoap is a fun soap dispenser designed for teaching children healthy hand washing habits.
SquidSoap works by applying a small ink mark on a person's hand when they press the pump to dispense the soap. The ink is designed to wash off after the hands are washed for about 15-20 seconds, which is the time recommended by most doctors.
SquidSoap is lots of fun for kids, since they love to get marked. It makes hand washing more like a game. Also, the very stretchable squid toy is a blast to play with and will provide hours of entertainment. (watch demonstration)

Property spectrum: Information
Like the egg, this product gives you feedback. The child gets a mark on it's hand and has to wash it off. When the mark is gone, your hands are washed well.

Please do not hesitate to send us a great innovation you have spotted. We might include it in our next month issue.

In the framework of this project we gladly invite you to a congregation of entrepreneurs, the Belgian ICT industry leaders, biotech industry leaders, researchers, the government, and SMB and upcoming companies.
This conference takes place on Tuesday September 12th at Accenta - Flanders Expo, Gent (18h30).
