Innovation Highlights

Paper Shredder Recycles Paper

A vision for the future: no more sorting, paper separating, curbside collection. Just feed your business papers into the shredder, turn the Meiko SEED system on and overnight the used paper is recycled into a clean, fresh pile of 1500 new sheets of paper.

The process consists of two machines, similar in size and appearance to an ordinary office photocopying system. The first part of the system, RPN-1500P, dissolves used paper into pulp. This achieves the perfect security which offices today seek via cross-shredding. The second unit, RPM-1500S, receives the pulp slurry via pipe from the first unit and reconstructs, dries and cuts it into a perfect stack of A4 sheets. Only tap water is needed for the process, no chemicals are added.

The fully automated process can produce 1500 sheets of paper in ten hours, consuming 200 liters of water and 38 kWh of electricity.

Property spectrum: Different Components
Increasing the number of dissimilar elements in a system can bring additional functionality, improved operability, and convenience. The opposite function here is that paper can be printed and then recycled.

Big Eye Needle

Big Eye Needle is an ordinary loop-eye sewing needle except it's made of some new fangled metal. With a bit of pressure, the tiny loop-eye expands to the size of a button hole making threading a cinch - literally. Gone are the days of far sighted clumsy hands and sore thumbs.

Property spectrum: Flexibility
Increasing flexibility is one of the most applied properties. Many products evolve from rigid to completely flexible. The main benefits that can be gained from making a similar evolution are better damage protection, more compact folding and the ability to make variations in size and shape.

Ambient temperature NOx and NO2 filter

Most NOx catalytic filters operate at temperatures as high as 200° C. This catalytic filter removes 100% of NOx and NO2 at ambient temperatures. In addition to its application to internal combustion engines, it can operate to remove pollution from a building's air or make the exhaust of an indoor generator breathable. The current generation of highly effective NOx filters requires ammonia or urea as consumables; this technology does not, and operates as a true catalyst with no consumables. This makes it most useful in situations where you cannot control the NOx content of the input gases, where it's not practical to store quantities of consumable chemicals, and where regular maintenance may be an issue. The catalyst coating consists of magnesium dioxide and copper oxide, with an alkali to absorb the NO2.

Property spectrum: Webs & fibres
Solid components are replaced with webbed and fibrous materials for improved strength/weight ratios, flexibility, and durability. A filter with an active catalytic coating allows the filter to work at lower temperatures.

Sunlight Illuminated LCD Display

LG is unveiling a display that is illuminated by sunlight while outdoors, which means it helps decrease power consumption of notebooks by 75% while outside.

Leveraging LG Display's "Backlight Data Signal Switching Technology", the use of selective reflection plates in existing backlight panels enables the switch from reflective mode in a high luminance setting (sunlight) to transmissive mode in a low luminance setting (indoors and at night). This is the first LCD panel to allow users to easily switch from backlight use (transmissive mode) to outdoor reflective mode with the touch of a button.

That means the amount of battery power needed to run the notebook while outside falls to just 25% of previous levels.

Property spectrum: Coordination
This principle describes the coordination between components, systems, and their environments towards a common goal. When outside, the sun is used to light the screen, and when inside, it switches backlight mode.

Quench shower reuses runoff water

Environmentally sustainable water conservation shower uses around 4 litres (1 gallon). Enjoy long hot powerful showers without guilt about wasting water, using around 4 litres ( 1gallon). With a Quench shower you will save water, save energy and help save the planet. Our water conservation technology provides water recycling so you extract the maximum benefit from every precious drop. This is environmentally sustainable water conservation at its best.

Simply enter the Quench shower and begin to efficiently wash your body using soap & shampoo and rinse off thoroughly. This can be achieved in about 2 minutes using around 20 litres of water. Once the soapy water has disappeared down the drain, push down the drain cover and allow the reservoir to fill (approximately 4 litres (1 gallon) of clean temperature-controlled water). Turn the shower off.

Activate the Auto-Mode and the water will re-circulate continuously through the shower for as long as you like. The water is filtered, pressurised and heated to the temperature that is set by the user at the control panel – using only 4 litres (1 gallon)!

Property spectrum: Integration
This property describes integrating different functions in your product to increase the user convenience. Some of the benefits of adding additional functions are: reducing number of systems required and improved operability. A separate integrated drain system helps recycle the water which would otherwise be wasted.

Instant noodles with built-in flexible fork

This month we selected the submission of KRD Pravin.

Maggi Cuppa Mania is a convenient instant noodle meal with a foldable fork in side. The fork can be bent and placed in the cup and can be straightened for use. This improvement in the fork was done to help keep this fork in the cup of instant noodles product. The fork was a necessary requirement for this ‘anytime on the go’ ready to eat noodle cup to make it truly ‘anytime on the go’ product. The fork takes less space, fits in the size of the noodle cup easily and is robust enough to eat the prepared noodles.

Property spectrum: Flexibility
Flexibility means improvement of a system from an immobile system to a structure with multiple joints. This simple example of a fork depicts evolution in flexibility.

Please do not hesitate to send us a great innovation you have spotted. We might include it in our next month issue.

Front end of Innovation

CREAX was proud to be part of the Front End of Innovation Europe (FEI) conference, at the Fairmont Monte Carlo. CREAX addressed the issue of efficient innovation and use of knowledge resources in the innovation process. CREAX thanks the organisation and in particular all the enthusiast participants who visited the CREAX booth.

The Flemish Primitives

The Flemish Primitives event delivers a creative boost for the food industry and gastronomy in Belgium and the world, by promoting interaction between scientists, the worlds most famous chefs and artists.

In the 15th and 16th century, "The Flemish Primitives" were masters in combining talent with new techniques. The event "The Flemish Primitives" continues in the same spirit. Respect for food products and beverages, the knowledge of the classic cooking techniques combined with a stimulation of new techniques and creativity. This event will be an annual meeting place for cross fertilisation between food and industry, gastronomy, wine world, artists and even scientists. The first edition of "The Flemish Primitive" focused on FoodPairing.

Upcoming events

The following events have been planned for the coming months:
19 February 2009 Innovation Smartees (Ghent, Belgium)
